Adapted Finger Loom

Adapted Finger Loom - open-source assistive technology prototype by the The Center for Discovery community

The challenge

Linda is a 68 year old woman with athetoid cerebral palsy who has enjoyed weaving all her life. As she's gotten older, it has become increasingly difficult for her to use both traditional and adapted loom hooks.

Who it helps

For people with limited dexterity and impaired hand function who wish to weave using a loom.

How it works

Digitally-designed 3D printed pegs with hollow cavities allow her to use her finger to weave the yarn instead of a hook tool. The loom also slides laterally and locks in place with ease, allowing smooth progression as she weaves.

An adapted finger loom tailored to her abilities allows her to weave using only her fingers, eliminating the need for hand tools.

Tools needed

PC or MAC I7 +

Screwdriver set

FDM Printer
