The Heart House is an educational tool with key features of the heart presented in a kid-friendly way. The interior is divided into "rooms" to distinguish sections of the heart. The idea given by the Child Life specialists of Nicklaus was to create a sort of transportable doll house that could be closed or opened to reveal the rooms. The model was intended to be printed in different colors to show the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the heart. The doorways between rooms represent valves within the heart. By inserting operable doors, the Child Life Specialist can explain how particular CHD's is affecting the child's own heart.
The Child Life specialists needed an educational tool that would make it easier to explain CHD to families and children alike. They needed a simplified version of the heart that could be interactive and kid-friendly.
The Nicklaus Childrens Hospital's Child Life specialists are the first to meet with families and children to help them find the best care. They explained that children are likely to be diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) within their earliest years, but it's difficult to explain a CHD to a child under the age of 5.
