Mobile Emergency Armchair

Mobile Emergency Armchair - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM Israel community community

About this project

A modified IKEA armchair equipped with wheels, designed to function as both a comfortable sitting option and a mobility aid for emergency situations.

The challenge

In emergencies, Gabriel's inability to transfer quickly from his couch to a wheelchair prevents him from reaching a shelter in time. This delay compromises his safety during sudden alerts.

Who it helps

This product is specifically for individuals with limited mobility who require a wheelchair, such as Gabriel, an elderly man living in Nahariya, a conflict zone within rocket and missile range.

How it works

The armchair combines the comfort of a standard daily-use chair with the functionality of a wheelchair, eliminating the need for a transfer. It allows Gabriel to sit comfortably throughout the day and move to a protected area quickly and safely when needed. The dual-purpose design ensures that mobility is immediately available during emergencies without compromising daily comfort.
