The team proposed a method of uploading Daniel's blood glucose values to the internet, so that his parents can remotely monitor his blood glucose and receive alarms in case of emergency.
Despite offering a large relief from the burden of diabetes, Daniel's current system is far from perfect and suffers from two main problems: The first one is when Daniel's blood glucose drifts outside of safe ranges, the only alarm given is from his pump and it is so quiet it does not wake him up. To this day, Daniel must sleep in the same room as his parents so they can wake him up during the night if necessary. This is also a problem during activities such as snowboarding, where in many layers of clothing the alarm cannot be clearly heard. The second one is that anytime Daniel is away from his parents, they have no idea if his blood glucose is within safe ranges and are constantly worrying. They must frequently call and check up on him.
Daniel Dennison is an active 10 year-old, he loves swimming, biking, and snowboarding. Unfortunately, 5 years ago Daniel was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He now wears a continuous blood glucose monitor (CGM) alongside a waist-worn computer and insulin pump.
