Adaptive Nail Clipper

Adaptive Nail Clipper - open-source assistive technology product by the Shepherd Center community

About this project

A 3D-printed adaptive nail clipper that mounts standard clippers onto a stable base, enabling individuals with limited pinch strength or fine motor control to trim their nails using a simple downward motion instead of precise finger positioning and squeezing.

The challenge

The Shepherd Center strives to increase independence

during activities of daily living such as trimming nails.

Who it helps

Intended users of this Adaptive Nail Clipper are individuals with limited

pinch strength or fine motor movement in the fingers. This could lead

to difficulty aligning and compressing nail clippers properly.

How it works

Intended users of this Adaptive Nail Clipper are individuals with limited pinch strength or fine motor movement in the fingers. This could lead to difficulty aligning and compressing nail clippers properly.

The Shepherd Center strives to increase independence during activities of daily living such as trimming nails.

The Adaptive Nail Clipper limits the need for pinch strength and fine motor movement in the fingers when trimming nails. A base is attached to stabilize the clippers on a surface, requiring only one downward motion to clip the nail.

The Adaptive Nail Clipper is a small, 3D printed plate with a flat base screwed into a nail clipper. The plate allows for 120-degree movement of the clippers.
