Blood Pressure Cuff Valve Knob

Blood Pressure Cuff Valve Knob - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Thomas Jefferson University community

The challenge

BP cuff valves are hard to turn. The inability to use their cuffs impacted school and work (respectively), and also their ability to care for their clients without harming themselves. This simple built-up knob allowed them to complete needed clinical work.

Who it helps

OT students and a faculty member who had difficulty with turning the knob of a BP cuff due to decreased hand strength/coordination/sensation, increased hand pain, or a need to complete this task easily with one hand.

How it works

The improved ergonomics and increased size of the knob addresses their symptoms and functional limitations by reducing stress and pain on joints and removing the need for extra strength, sensation, or coordination to turn the knob.

Built up knob that attaches to the valve of a BP cuff with indentations for fingers.

Tools needed

PC or MAC I7 +

Digital caliber

FDM Printer
