Chari

Chari - open-source assistive technology concept by the Leffell School community

About this project

The team’s goal was to create a mechanism that would lighten part of an object’s weight, allowing Chari to pick up objects while standing straight up. Originally, they attempted to create this using a vacuum attachment, but they soon realized the weight of the vacuum itself was only adding to the weight without much benefit. They then focused on creating a grabber device that would help Chari pick up items at various heights and weights. In preparation for the TOM event, they brainstormed ways to alleviate any pressure it may put on her wrist when picking up heavy items and settled on using velcro. Additionally, they added detachable memory foam at the head of the grabber to pick up smaller items and added magnets to pick up magnetic items. Finally, they added a stabilizer to help her grip heavy objects and vinyl flowers for decoration.

The challenge

She is unable to bend down and pick up objects off the floor.

Who it helps

Chari is an adult woman in Westchester. She was in a car accident 20 years ago and she now struggles with nerve damage and back pain.
