Cooking Aid for Partial Amputee

Cooking Aid for Partial Amputee - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Vanderbilt University community

The challenge

Beverly had a partial amputation in her left hand due to blood clots and has trouble with the right side of her body after suffering from a stroke. She loves cooking and wants to be more independent in the kitchen.

Who it helps

Anyone with a partial hand amputation or weakness in the hands that prevents them from being able to grip kitchen utensils.

How it works

This solution will empower Beverly to be more independent in the kitchen by enabling her to securely hold and control a wider range of utensils, significantly reducing the assistance she needs while cooking.

Our solution features a multi-part system consisting of a customized hand brace and adjustable straps designed to secure utensils of various sizes. The straps securely fasten to the brace with Velcro, providing users with reliable control of the utensils.
