CPAP Mask Applicator

CPAP Mask Applicator - open-source assistive technology concept by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Mary has sleep apnoea and needs a CPAP mask at night to help keep her airways open. Mary was born with foreshortened limbs due to the pregnancy drug, thalidomide. Because of this she can't independently apply her CPAP mask.

Who it helps

Mary has been involved with TOM: Melbourne since 2019, as a Need-Knower, Ambassador and Disability Awareness Educator. Mary is also a highly qualified social worker, counsellor and sits on the board of Footscray Community Arts.

How it works

Mary is able to hook the head strap of the mask with the hook end of the stick and then manipulate the stick via a handle pull the strap over her head. She can then remove the mask via a similar process.

A CPAP application stick that allows Mary to hook the mask over her head and remove it again.
