Hands Free Makeup Applicator - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Berkeley community

About this project

The purpose of this device is to hold makeup steady via several adjustable arms, allowing the user to apply makeup by moving their face along their brushes and pencils. The device has an acrylic base, Loc-Line arms, and various makeup graspers at the top of each arm. There are also two mirrors and one arm with a rotating base.

The challenge

Her challenge is to be able to apply makeup without using hands or arms, but rather with head and neck muscles. The product is meant to hold makeup steady via several adjustable arms, allowing the user to apply makeup by moving their face along their brushes and pencils. This device is intended for users who have limited arm/hand function but good head/neck function.

Who it helps

Ligia is quadriplegic. She applies her makeup by asking a caretaker or one of her sons to hold and position her brushes, pencils and lipsticks while she would mover her face and apply her own makeup flawlessly. Howeverm this system would slow down her morning routine.
