Parastroll: Hands-free Stroller Belt

Parastroll: Hands-free Stroller Belt - open-source assistive technology product by the TOM Israel community community

About this project

The ParaStroll is a hands-free stroller connector that belts around the user's waist. It attaches securely to the stroller’s handlebar and uses a dual-piston mechanism which helps compensate for crutch-assisted walking, ensuring a smooth ride for the child and stroller.

The challenge

Erel uses crutches and she cannot use both hands with the crutches while pushing the baby stroller, which makes it difficult for her to walk. Walking and pushing stroller independently is crucial for her, symbolizing her pursuit of autonomy as a mother.

Who it helps

Erel is a former Paralympian swimmer who participated in three Paralympic Games. She hung up her swimming career and recently added a new role when she became a mother. Erel has partial paralysis in both legs and walks daily with crutches.

How it works

Erel is a former Paralympian swimmer who participated in three Paralympic Games. She has partial paralysis in both legs and walks with the assistance of forearm crutches. When becoming a mother, she wanted to find a way to take her child for walks outside while relying on her crutches.

The ParaStroll was designed for parents who rely on crutches for mobility, such as those with partial paralysis in their legs or other disability.

Using crutches typically requires both hands, which makes pushing a stroller difficult or even impossible. This limitation can impact the independence of parents who need to move around with their child. The ParaStroll addresses this challenge, allowing these parents to reclaim freedom in their daily routines.

By connecting the stroller to the user's waist, the ParaStroll allows parents to walk with crutches while effortlessly moving the stroller forward without using their hands. This innovative design provides a practical solution, enabling parents to walk safely, confidently, and independently with their child.

The ParaStroll is a hands-free stroller connector that belts around the user's waist. It attaches securely to the stroller’s handle and uses a dual-piston mechanism to translate the user’s crutch-assisted walking motion into a smooth, forward glide for the stroller.
