FMG-Controlled Prosthesis for Below-Elbow Amputees

FMG-Controlled Prosthesis for Below-Elbow Amputees - open-source assistive technology working model by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Most advanced prosthetic arms are expensive, complex, and not accessible to many users. Simpler prostheses often lack real functional control.

This project provides a low-cost and simple solution that enables intuitive control of a prosthetic hand.

Who it helps

Below-the-elbow amputees who seek a more comfortable alternative to mechanical harness-operated prostheses.

We worked with our Need-Knower, Maximiliano David Sidelski, throughout the development process to ensure the solution fits real-life needs.

How it works

It is low-cost, simple, and easy to use, with personal calibration for each user. The system is also compatible with standard government-issued prosthetic arms, making it an accessible and practical solution for a wide range of amputees.

We developed a low-cost Force Myography (FMG)-based control system that uses a single force sensor to detect forearm muscle contractions and trigger a servo motor for pinch grip. The servo motor is mounted according to Bionic Prosthesis project on TOM.
