Gemma

Gemma - open-source assistive technology concept by the Leffell School community

About this project

Gemma wanted to ideate and build 3D printed representations of the ‘core’ words Gemma teaches her patients, Core words are essential to language, but are not easily represented by an image. , They are vital when learning how to communicate. " The team settled on creating a number of 3D printed objects and took influence from the graphics that represented each word. They had to learn some new skills, like how to create resin castings to make them quicker and to best replicate the design in the future. They are excited for Gemma to implement the use of these objects in her work with children and hope to adjust our designs based on her feedback.

The challenge

Currently, she uses a speech application to assist in the process, but her goal is to have physical representations of some of the words as well, in order to reinforce the kids' vocabularies. She also speaks Italian.

Who it helps

Gemma is a speech pathologist who specializes in teaching young children with Autism basic communication skills.
