GripUp

GripUp - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Chava is highly motivated by cooking activities. Adaptive tools like a specialized knife can support his development while respecting his sensory needs, promoting greater independence.

Who it helps

Chava is a 7-year-old boy with Down syndrome. He wears glasses and is intolerant to certain textures and sensitive to smells. Has low muscle tone, lacks strength, and has no fine motor control.

How it works

This adaptive knife helps kids with motor and sensory challenges to build motor skills and independence. Its ergonomic acrylic design and interchangeable blades make cooking safe, motivating, and accessible, supporting growth through real, meaningful tasks

Our project is the design and development of an adaptive kitchen knife specifically tailored for children with motor and sensory challenges—particularly those with Down syndrome.
