Gynmastics Flip Assistive Device

Gynmastics Flip Assistive Device - open-source assistive technology concept by the Duke University community

The challenge

A flip is a difficult task for both the need-knowers and the specialists assisting them. This device makes the need-knower feel more comfortable and safe while also making it easier for the specialists. And our need-knowers love gymnastics!

Who it helps

Christopher and Sydney both love doing gymnastics but have disabilities that limit their ability to perform a flip. Specifically, they have muscle limitations and are fearful, making it much more difficult for them.

How it works

The design was primarily inspired by a video of Christopher doing a flip around a gymnastics bar. This solution improves the safety of his flip while also making it more effortless for the specialists helping him

Our solution is effectively a swing, but instead the seat is attached to rigid tubes. There would be two rings that attach to the bar, and there would also be a seatbelt to ensure Christopher is safe during the duration of the flip.
