Hemi Independence Strap

Hemi Independence Strap - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Ichilov hospital community

The challenge

Needed because users with hemiparesis can’t self-attach the affected arm to a walker, delaying safe transfers. The one-handed strap enables quick, independent arm securing, earlier walker adoption, more practice, and potentially shorter rehab.

Who it helps

Hemi Independence Strap is for people with one-sided arm/hand weakness (e.g., post-stroke) using a forearm-support walker who need a one-handed way to secure and position the affected arm safely, without help.

How it works

It enables one-handed, fast arm attachment to the walker: the magnetic buckle closes easily, the twist-to-tighten strap sets secure tension, and rear Velcro wraps prevent slip-out—reducing assistance, speeding transfers, and improving stability.

Hemi Independence Strap: a 3D-printed TPU walker grip with a magnetic buckle and one-hand twist-to-tighten strap, plus rear Velcro wrist wraps—allowing users to quickly and safely secure the affected arm to the walker.
