Jedi - Sitting and standing wheelchair

Jedi - Sitting and standing wheelchair - open-source assistive technology working model by the Sofia community

About this project

Team Jedi built Jedi a wheelchair that he can both stand and sit on and is adjustable as he grows. A pediatric motor wheelchair used as a wheelchair and a stander considered with his special needs and growth.

The challenge

The team is building him a wheelchair that he can both stand and sit on and will be able to adjust to him as he grows. Existing solutions cost $30-40K. This project began with TOM:Sofia in April 2017.

Who it helps

Jedi is 6 years old boy with Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease that affects the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement. He uses two wheelchairs, an electric one for standing up and a second standard electric wheelchair which he switches to when he is tired. The transfer between wheelchairs can get complicated for him and his family.
