Medtronic is publicly sharing the design specifications for the Puritan Bennett™ 560 (PB 560) to enable participants across industries to evaluate options for rapid ventilator manufacturing to help doctors and patients dealing with COVID-19. The PB 560 is compact and lightweight making it suitable for different healthcare environments and settings. This is a qualified design with 10 years of medical use.
Medtronic is mobilizing to fight the COVID-19 pandemic — and we’re inviting innovators everywhere to join us. Currently, there is a shortage of respirators and ventilators around the world. As recently announced, Medtronic is responding to this crisis by making the design files for the PB560 ventilator system available to the public. Our hope is that manufacturers and engineers will use this intellectual property to inspire their own potentially lifesaving innovations.
With over 798,781 cases of COVID-19 worldwide, ventilators for patients with severe cases of COVID-19 are in short supply.
Product Specs
Via Medtronic : The zip file materials include:
Design and manufacturing information, documentation and user manuals about the Puritan Bennett 560 ventilator (the “PB 560 Ventilator”) (“Design Materials”) and,
Software for the PB560 Ventilator in source code and object code form (“Software”).
These terms apply to the PB560 Ventilator only and not any other projects you may work on now or in the future with Medtronic. In this license, “you” refers to the entity that has downloaded the Design Materials and Software.
What's Missing
Firmware
Mechanical design
PCB layout
Complete BOM, not just of the electronics but of all the components

Modifications
Via Medtronic : If you modify, transform, improve or build upon the Design Materials or the Software (collectively, “Modifications”), you must make your Modifications available under a license that includes terms identical to the terms of this license. Everyone who receives the Design Materials or the Software receives a license from Medtronic under the terms of this license. You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
Developer History
Via Medtronic : The medical and healthcare communities in the United States and across the world currently are responding to a medical emergency involving spread of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (“COVID-19”). On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (“WHO”) declared the outbreak of COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (“PHEIC”), and, on March 11, 2020, the WHO Director General declared COVID-19 a pandemic. On March 13, 2020, President Donald J. Trump declared a National Emergency in the United States due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated in its March 2020 ventilator guidance (“FDA Guidance”), it is necessary to maintain an adequate supply of mechanical ventilators “to support patients who develop respiratory compromise from COVID-19.” Consistent with the FDA Guidance, and in accordance with the public health and medical response of governmental agencies around the world, Medtronic is making available this package of materials to enable participants across industries to leverage their own expertise and resources to evaluate options for rapid ventilator manufacturing to help doctors and patients dealing with COVID-19.
Medtronic was founded in 1949 as a medical equipment repair shop by Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie. Their first notable product was a wearable, battery-powered cardiac pacemaker. As the current global leader in medical technology, services, and solutions, their product line includes implantable mechanical devices, drug and biologic delivery devices, and powered and advanced energy surgical instruments used in 150+ countries.
The build files for Medtronic Portable Ventilator are free to download from this page - open source, shared by TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers.
