Open-grip Writing Aid

Open-grip Writing Aid - open-source assistive technology product by the HIT - FIXPERTS community

About this project

The flexible cuff fits over the hand and holds the pen in place using the palm rather than the fingers. This allows users to write, draw, or paint with natural hand movement while reducing strain and effort.

The challenge

Traditional pens rely on grip strength and fine motor control, which can be tiring or inaccessible for many users. This design shifts the work from squeezing to supporting, enabling longer, more comfortable use and greater independence.

Who it helps

Designed for people who experience hand fatigue, reduced grip strength, tremors, pain, or limited finger dexterity, and find holding a pen, pencil, or brush difficult.

How it works

A cuff-style pen holder that slides comfortably over the palm, securely positioning a writing or drawing tool without requiring a tight grip or sustained squeezing.

Tools needed

Prusa slicer

FDM Printer
