PVC Walker

PVC Walker - open-source assistive technology working model by the Cal State University San Marcos community

The challenge

Our need knower, Lyra, is a two-year-old with a rare syndrome affecting her gross motor skills. At only 18 lbs, she is too small for any commercially available walker.

Who it helps

Toddlers with Rare Syndromes

Children like Lyra with rare developmental syndromes that affect gross motor skills and balance.

Children Recovering from Surgery or Injury

Children with Low Muscle Tone (Hypotonia)

How it works

The custom PVC walker provides safe, lightweight support tailored to Lyra’s size, helping her build balance, confidence, and independence—solving the lack of mobility aids for very small children with developmental delays.

We created a lightweight, custom-sized PVC walker to support Lyra’s balance and mobility—offering an affordable, child-specific solution where no commercial options existed for her size and needs.
