Rehab Escape Room

About this project

The solution is an escape room for the whole family. The uniqueness of this specific room is that participants can not communicate in words. The room consists of 5 challenges: The first is Picture Charades: Each one of 4 people gets a picture and has to mime it with body language to the rest of the group. The rest of the group will try to understand what they see and throw a switch next to the appropriate picture on a board next to them. When all 4 correct switches (and only those 4 switches) are on, a light will turn on to let them know they got the right pictures. Each picture has a number on it. The 4 numbers together are the code to the lock to the next room. The situations are from the daily life of the patient. The second is Jars: A large box with jars inside and holes at the sides of the box which can fit only a single hand. Two to four people work together, each with one hand in the box, to unscrew the leads of the jars one by one, until they find in one of the jars the keys to the lock to the next part of the room. The rest of the jars contains meaningless objects. The third is Distortion: Participants hear the words "Green Arrow" backwards. They see on the floor a stepping carpet which has arrows of different colors on it and is connected to a computer. There are two arrows of each color and only when participants step on the two arrows of the right color the door to the next step opens. The forth is Riddle: On the wall are 4 signs with supposedly meaningless words in capital English letters. There is a keyboard with the caps lock marked (as a clue). The solution to the riddle is to replace the capital English letters to their Herbew correspondents on the keyboard. Replacing all letters correctly in a word will reveal a number in Hebrew. All 4 numbers are the code of the lock to the next phase. The fifth and last is Hands: Two hands appear on the two walls far away from each other. The participants have to realise that they have to touch each other and the hands on the wall to close a circuit. When they do that, a string of lights will be activated around the exit door, and the door to the whole room will open.

The challenge

The challenge is to help the need-knowers family understanding on his daily challenges, and to create a meaningful joint experience which can bring them together in finding alternative solutions to these challenges

Who it helps

The need knowers are people with Aphasia: an impairment of language which affects the production and comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write, usually due to a brain injury - most commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals.
