Team Extra Set of Hands

Team Extra Set of Hands - open-source assistive technology working model by the Alberta community

About this project

The teams design has a grabber incorporated into the cane. It allows for simultaneous use of the cane's supporting function - and a grabber function. The user positions the cane near the dropped object and aims the cane using a laser light. The arm then extends downward and grabs the object with a robotic clenching hand. The arm then retracts and the user can grasp the dropped object.

The challenge

Rose has a challenging time picking things up off the floor as a result of the freezing and losing her balance. She has another grabber - but it doesn't pick up flat pieces of paper, or little objects like pills and sometimes she drops the grabber itself.

Who it helps

Rose was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease at the end of 2002. She often looses her balance, and struggles with “freezing”, a sudden, brief inability to start movement or to continue moving (like walking). She especially loses her balance when she bends down to reach for something.
