Team Thomas - Pole Vaulting Attachment

Team Thomas - Pole Vaulting Attachment - open-source assistive technology concept by the Arizona State University community

The challenge

Currently, Thomas' attachment pushes the pole but does not allow him to grab firmly or apply pressure to vault properly. This improved design will help to re-open the world of pole vaulting to Thomas and anyone with arm amputations.

Who it helps

Pole vaulting has been a large part of Thomas's life, from high school sports to full-time coaching, but his amputation has made vaulting difficult. This attachment is designed for Thomas, but could be used by any vaulters with a prosthetic arm.

How it works

This solution will allow him to firmly hold the pole while vaulting, allowing him to put more force on the pole and do a more complete vault.

Our solution is a new attachment for Thomas' existing carbon fiber prosthetic.
