The Grabber

The Grabber - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Bay Area community

About this project

The team created a device that helps Kim grab things with her mouth and bring them closer for ease of use. This simple and elegant mechanical grabber is easy and inexpensive to produce. The success of the initial prototypes had shown many need-knowers what is possible. The Grabber is a device that allows the user to grab and move objects using your mouth. The device is intended for people who are unable to use their hands to grab or move objects.

The challenge

She was looking for assistive technology ideas to better aid her around the house, i.e. cooking, cleaning and most importantly opening and closing doors so that she is able to enter and exit her house when needed. No such product exists that allows people without the use of limbs to manipulate objects in their environment.

Who it helps

Kim Lathrop was born with no arms or legs. She lives on her own and as you can imagine, every day is a challenge.
