Wheelchair Accessible Baby Crib

Wheelchair Accessible Baby Crib - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

The standard crib is at a height that does not allow frontal access for the wheelchair to get close to the crib. The standard crib side rail opens downwards which would block access.

Who it helps

First time parents, who are both wheelchair users. The father has Cerebral Palsy and the mother

Osteogenesis Imperfecta. She is a lawyer and he works in high tech. They live independently

with an assistant.

How it works

First time parents, who are both wheelchair users. The father has Cerebral Palsy and the mother Osteogenesis Imperfecta. She is a lawyer and he works in high tech. They live independently with an assistant.

A raised crib allows the NK to access the crib with a frontal approach. The side sliding crib rail access enables safe access to place the baby in the crib, change a diaper and play with her.

A standard Ikea baby crib is modified with a slide opening door and is raised to the height that enables frontal wheelchair access.
