Adapted Bicycle Pedal Attachments

Adapted Bicycle Pedal Attachments - open-source assistive technology working model by the Emory University community

The challenge

She is a 4 year old girl who suffered from cancer at 7 months old, causing her right quad to be removed. The goal of this project is to provide a solution that both secures her weaker leg and enables her to predominantly pedal with her strong leg.

Who it helps

People (especially kids) who face limitations with bicycle riding

How it works

The pedal for her weaker leg addresses the challenge of stability by securing her foot in place. The pedal for her stronger leg consists of a half shell which allows for her to be able to not only push down normally, but also use the top part to pull up.

One pedal attachment will contain a half shell covering the toes, as well as two straps that would secure the foot. The other pedal will also have a toe cover, but not a strap, allowing easy in-and-out access.

Tools needed
