Airplane Wheelchair

Airplane Wheelchair - open-source assistive technology concept by the University of Alabama community

The challenge

Normal wheelchairs cannot be used aboard an airplane, and can be destroyed or damaged if they are stored in checked luggage.

Who it helps

All wheelchair users who want to travel.

How it works

The chair can be brought aboard an airplane, be safely stored in the cabin, and then be used as a regular wheelchair at the destination.

A wheelchair that can be configured to fit the dimensions of an airplane aisle. The wheelchair will be able to be folded into the size of a carry-on so that it can be stowed during flight. After arrival, the wheelchair will be able to be used normally.
