Wheelchair Umbrella Holder

Wheelchair Umbrella Holder - open-source assistive technology prototype by the University of Alabama community

The challenge

Dr. Stran and other wheelchair users have noted difficulties using a wheelchair in the rain, particularly because umbrella use while wheeling is impractical. Existing holders often lack adjustability, full-body coverage, or stability in windy conditions.

Who it helps

This device is intended for any wheelchair user who wants an umbrella holder that's attachable to their wheelchair.

How it works

The attachment mechanism on the backframe ensures easy attachment while preventing obstruction of the user’s movement. The chamber mechanism provides an accessible way to insert the umbrella and is designed to maintain stability even in windier weather.

This wheelchair umbrella holder consists of an easily attachable mechanism that sits on the wheelchair's backframe and two cylindrical chambers designed to hold the umbrella.
