Adjustable Dog Leash Holder Wheelchair Attachment

Adjustable Dog Leash Holder Wheelchair Attachment - open-source assistive technology working model by the Pennsylvania State University community

The challenge

When a wheelchair user is training a service dog, certain commands are more difficult with a leash at a set length. Typical retractable leashes have safety concerns and can be difficult to operate for users with low hand dexterity.

Who it helps

Wheelchair users who have low hand dexterity and use service dog companions.

How it works

The user will be able to shorten the leash by hooking/unhooking a D-ring attached 1/2 along the leash. It will stay at the shortened length until the D-ring is unhooked. This mechanism is easy to use, simple and safe, which improves on current products.

A 3D printed attachment for a wheelchair that can hold the end of a leash so the wheelchair user can have both hands free. The dog leash can be shortened by the user grabbing up on the leash to another loop and hooking that loop on to shorten the leash.
