Wheelchair Umbrella

Wheelchair Umbrella - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Columbia University community

About this project

The device is intended to be used by those in a wheelchair needing support for an

umbrella regardless of wind condition and wheelchair design. Providing sufficient

coverage when moving from chair to vehicle.

The challenge

Both Linda and James have a problem maneuvering in a wheelchair on rainy days while using an umbrella. The team will create a device that would work for both of them.

Who it helps

James sustained a spinal cord injury at the age of 17 while attending college. He is a Spinal Cord Injury Outreach Coordinator at Mount Sinai Hospital, and the founding president of the NYC Chapter of United Spinal.

Linda contracted polio at the age of 1 and has been living with significant weakness in all extremities and trunk muscles. She is a speech-language pathologist and special educator with a love of nature and the outdoors, including activities such as SCUBA diving, kayaking, and camping.
