Assisted eating device powered by switch

Assisted eating device powered by switch - open-source assistive technology concept by the Duquesne University community

About this project

A box that will slide over the NK arm of his wheelchair providing something for his dominant arm to rest upon comfortably. This device will be connected to an external switch than when pressed the top of the box will raise from the base to help the NK arm/hand to his mouth to feed. Then the NK can press the switch again to lower the base to return to a neutral position.

The challenge

NK would like to gain the independence of being able to feed himself during mealtime and not have to rely on family, friends, or teachers. Also due to his age, NK currently does not enjoy being fed by others.

Who it helps

NK is a teenage boy with muscular dystrophy who struggles to self feed due to limited arm strength and muscle tone. He currently requires assistance at all meals for feeding and uses a long handled utensil during the small amount of time he can feed himself due to the lack of movement he currently has.
