Assisted Eating Device Powered by Switch

Assisted Eating Device Powered by Switch - open-source assistive technology concept by the Duquesne University community

The challenge

To help individuals with disabilities gain independence in daily skills such as eating.

Who it helps

NK is a teenage boy with muscular dystrophy who struggles to self feed due to limited arm strength and muscle tone. He currently requires assistance at meals for feeding and uses a long handled utensil during the small amount of time he can feed himself.

How it works

This solution will help the NK gain independence with eating by using their functional movements to activate a device to help physically move their arm.

A box that will slide over the NK arm of his wheelchair. This device will be connected to an external switch than when pressed the top of the box will raise from the base to help the NK arm/hand raise up. Once the button is pressed again the arm drops back
