Butt'Up - Bed to Wheelchair

Butt'Up - Bed to Wheelchair - open-source assistive technology concept by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Transferring from a bed or a sofa to a wheelchair can be a challenge. Because of the height of the wheelchair, that may be higher than the starting point of the transfer, transferring requires more effort to move to the wheelchair and can be dangerous.

Who it helps

This project is for people in wheelchairs that need a solution to elevate any bed or sofa higher than their wheelchair to make their transfer easier.

How it works

The aim of this project is to provide a simple mechanism that can be adapted on any couch or bed to elevate them in order that the person on them can be higher than their wheelchair when they need to transfer. This system can be controlled using a remote.

This project uses 4 linear actuators guided with slide rails, that are used to elevate the 4 footboards of a couch or a bed. These 4 actuators can be activated synchronously with a remote controller.
