Butt'Up - Wheelchair to bed

Butt'Up - Wheelchair to bed - open-source assistive technology working model by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Transferring from a wheelchair to a bed or a sofa can be a challenge, especially because of the height of the wheels. Passing over the wheels to go on a bed often requires help and can be dangerous. This project makes the transfer easier and safer.

Who it helps

This project is for people in wheelchairs for which elevating themselves over their wheelchair's wheels can be difficult and make transfers unsafe.

How it works

The mechanism placed under the sitting cushuon can be activated by the user thanks to two levers situated at the back. A blocking mechanism at the top position allow to person to stay in the elevated position and then easily transfer to a bed or a couch.

This project is built on a simple mechanism that is placed under the sitting cushion of the wheelchair. Using a lever system, linked to a carbon plate, the person will be able to lift themselves 10cm, allowing them to pass easily over the wheels.
