Multipurpose Wheelchair Armrest Hinge Hook (MWAHH)

Multipurpose Wheelchair Armrest Hinge Hook (MWAHH) - open-source assistive technology concept by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Users in wheelchairs need to secure their seatbelt such that when the user’s seatbelt when taken off, the belt does not get stuck in the wheels (which would disrupt daily life mobility without assistance)

Who it helps

Users in a wheelchair requiring assistance with preventing the seatbelt from getting caught in the wheels (especially in the case of limited arm mobility)

How it works

This solution will address the challenge by keeping the seatbelt from getting caught in the wheels and in the reach of the user to put back on.

A hooked platform with hinges which is attached to a wheelchair’s armrests. The platform can be deployed, put away, and removed as needed and the belt will rest over the hook such that when the user unbuckles the seatbelt, it will remain on the hooks.
