Change the environment - PicShell

Change the environment - PicShell - open-source assistive technology working model by the Philips community

About this project

an exciting system that isolates the child's environment and projects different kind videos stimulation on the tent fabric. The PicShell components: Bed Shell- a special tent that is easily assembled/disassembled on the hospital bed. The tent isolates the child's environment and allows him to focus on the video stimulation. Philips PicoPix projector - a very small projector. Special videos depend on the child's cognitive awareness –The staff and families will be able to add additional materials and music. Children's earphones – will isolate the noise from the hospital department and will enable audio stimulation. Mount for the projector – a special mount that holds the projector near the child's bed at the correct angle to project the movie on to the tent fabric.

The challenge

The Need-Knower would like to have a unique, enjoyable entertainment that will be suitable for his cognitive awareness and environment. Challenges: Isolate from the noise and other environmental stimulations of the ICU department. Prevent additional noise in the department. Provide a pleasant and peaceful focused view stimulation, depending on the child's cognitive awareness. Grant the ability to clean/sterilize the equipment. .The system needs to be easily assembled and disassembled as required. The system mustn’t obstruct the child and the staff's ability to access if needed.

Who it helps

Our goal population is children aged 0-5 that are admitted to the Intensive care Unit in "Reut" nursing health care facility in Tel Aviv. The medical background diverse from a congenital disease like SMA, genetics disorder, labor complications or major trauma injury ended with significant brain damage. Most of them are bedridden and connected to respirators monitors and other medical devices. A lot of the children have limited visits from their families and some of them are completely neglected. The cognitive ability varies from one child to another but most of them communicate with mimic movements only with very low cognitive ability. The environment is very noisy due to the ongoing treatment activity and medical devices alarms. There are a lot of colorful stimulations spread all over. All this ends with sensory overload. This poor background leads us to the medical staff request - to change the child daily environment. Develop a device that will separate the child for a short period from the noisy environment and will provide him a safe, secure and protected feeling, avert the noises and background stimulations and enable him to enjoy a pleasant, privet and peaceful focused view and actually few moments for himself...
