COVID-19 - PPE solutions

COVID-19 - PPE solutions - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) community

About this project

The Open Source Face Shield is a low cost, medical face shield designed to be quickly made using almost any flat material fabrication equipment (laser cutters, rule dies, drag knife, CNC punch, etc.), or even scissors and an office hole punch from any clear flexible material.

It requires no hardware or 3D printed parts, just two pieces of flexible clear plastic and an elastic band.

This design was created by Vadim Gordin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/vadimgordin/) as part of the Open Face PPE Project.

The challenge

Due to the global pandemic, the supply of face masks is extremely limited and not available to those who need them most. Moreover, the regular masks lifecycle is estimated at 8 hours whereas the virus can live up to 72 hours. An even greater danger that conventional masks present is that at the end of the day we would have a high viral/bacterial load trapped within millimeters of our nose and mouth, further exposing ourselves to these dangerous microbes.

Who it helps

Medical staff, first responders, police, and others on the front lines of combatting COVID-19 are in dire need of protective gear that will allow them to keep safe and healthy so that they keep treating patients, emergencies and maintain the public order.

How it works

As of 3/24, Mt. Sinai (NYC) Biodesign group has tested a number of open source respirators and is recommending this design for both internal use and for other healthcare systems.

Bill of Materials

COMPONENT DESCRIPTION SIZE NOTES SUPPLIER

Clear Plastic Face Shield 0.007" to .01" thick non-brittle clear material. PET or polycarbonate is good. 12.5" x 10.25" Qty 2 can be cut from 12x24, as the part is tapered McMaster Carr (link)

Forehead Strap Same material as the Face Shield 1" x 10.75" Cut alongside forehead strap McMaster Carr (link)

Elastic 3/8" or 1/2" wide elastic band 16" (searching for pre-cut supply) JO-ANN STORES, LLC

OPTIONAL

Foam 1"x1/2" strip 10" Cut to length. McMaster Carr

Warning - adding foam makes the shield much more difficult to clean.

Note: This design is provided with NO WARRANTIES. Prototypes have been used in a hospital setting with positive feedback. If you’re interested or capable of conducting further testing in hospital settings, please reach out via covid19.taskforce@nyu.edu
