COVID-19 PPE Solutions

COVID-19 PPE Solutions - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) community

About this project

This is a modified open source face shield developed by Florida International University (FIU) and Baptist Health South Florida. See additional info in the resources tab.

The challenge

Creating a protective face shield that is quick to print, easy to assemble and that can be scaled to be manufactured in large quantities.

Who it helps

Due to COVID19, Medical facilities worldwide are facing a dire shortage of face shields, N95 masks, and other personal protective equipment. Face Shields are not a replacement for N95 masks, however they do act as a protective physical barrier for healthcare workers's faces when dealing with patients' bodily fluids. Many conventional manufacturers have suspended production to follow government-mandated social distancing or run into supply chain issues due to the disruption in thre global econonmy. The Maker Community has committed to enacting Plan C: filling in the gap with an global network of independent DIY fabricators.

FIU has made five changes to the original design: 1)Modified the end shield attachment nubs on the 3D printed head band; 2) eliminated the holes used to hold the bumper at the bottom of the shield; 3) added the FIU logo; 4) used a standard presentation cover for the shield; 5) and used Velcro instead of elastic.

In addition to the digital files, please find below the materials and quantities we are using to create the first 1000 face shields.

23 roll/pairs of 12.6 yard Velcro . These are cut as per the dimensions in the Hook and Loop Strap Dimensions . On 4/6/2020, we updated the hook and look strap to connect to the brow band with a hole punch instead of a slit in the strap. See the Hook and Loop Dimensions 4.6.20 update .

PLACE THE LOOP SIDE OF THE VELCRO TOWARD THE HEAD FOR GREATER COMFORT.

6 boxes of 200 (extra box for errors and any additional shields) of Presentation Covers . Face Shield Acrylic Dimensions .

9 boxes of 120 13”x17” 2 Gallon Zip lock Plastic Bags .
