COVID-19 PPE Solutions

COVID-19 PPE Solutions - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) community

About this project

This design was created at the University of Idaho. This UVC Face Mask box will sanitize masks in less than 10 minutes. For more details please see the resources section below.

The challenge

Creating an easy design for sanitizing face masks.

Who it helps

Due to COVID19, Medical facilities worldwide are facing a dire shortage of protective gear, including face shields, N95 masks, protective suits and other personal protective equipment. Many conventional manufacturers have suspended production to follow government-mandated social distancing or run into supply chain issues due to the disruption in the global economy. The Maker Community has committed to enacting Plan C: filling in the gap with a global network of independent DIY fabricators.

How it works

Mobile mask sterilization stations that can be used to clean up to 32 masks at a time. The system uses ultraviolet C (UVC) light, a short-wavelength light capable of converting the virus into harmless carbon compounds and water.

Traditional UVC bulbs are also short supply because of the pandemic. The prototype system uses a more readily available LED bulb also capable of reaching the needed frequency for the germicide.
