Debbie's backrest

Debbie's backrest - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Shenkar College community

About this project

A device used to change the back position when lying down.

This product allows people with disabilities to change their body position when lying on a bed and make their bed more comfortable for reading a book, watching TV or just staying on the bed at whatever level they'd like. This item is easily carried, doesn't weigh much, folds up and is most ideal to take with you

on vacation. We have developed this product for the ALS patient, but it can be used by anyone who needs or wants it, and it is very easy to make.

The challenge

The challenge is to create a portable adjustable single bed or a portable accessory that can help her get out of bed and take her away from home.

Who it helps

Debbie, 36, suffers from a disease called ALS, a disease from the group of degenerative diseases that damages the motor nerve cells. She sits in a wheelchair and is attached to a ventilator. Debbie has trouble lying down and can only get out of bed using an adjustable bed. The situation makes it difficult for her husband and her to sleep elsewhere or to go on vacation. There are just a few hotels that provide such a bed.
