diPlay controller — an accessible and adjustable interface for videogames

diPlay controller — an accessible and adjustable interface for videogames - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

A high percentage of people with intellectual disabilities in this institution cannot play video games with a keyboard or comercial controllers, and existing accessible interfaces are too expensive to purchase.

Who it helps

The Portuguese Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Disabled Citizen of Lisbon - APPACDM of Lisbon - has as its Mission to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, with respect for the right to exercise full citizenship.

How it works

Button press is made easier by size, distance, shape customisation and number of active buttons (e.g. a two-key game will only have 2 buttons visible). A dedicated software allows to associate the keys of a keyboard to any of the 8 possible buttons.

A video game interface, accessible to people with mental and/or motor disabilities, modular in the number and position of buttons, low cost and reproducible with fabLabs technologies

Tools needed

PC or MAC I7 +

FDM Printer

Soldering set

Cable stripper

Laser Cutter
