Gas Pump Handle for Getting Gas With Limited Hand Strength

Gas Pump Handle for Getting Gas With Limited Hand Strength - open-source assistive technology concept by the Widener University community

The challenge

This project is needed because people with fine motor challenges who cannot use a typical gas pump are unable to put gas in their car independently. As a result, they are unable to access their community as fully as others without fine motor difficulties.

Who it helps

Users of this solution are people with Charcot Marie Tooth disease as well as anyone who has difficulty with fine motor tasks.

How it works

The design is meant to fit inside the space within the metal piece and the gas pump lever and to engage when the user carries out a key-turning motion with the device once it is secured in the space. It will also move the lock to keep the handle engaged.

This device allows users to engage the gas pump without the need for finger or grip strength. Instead, the device requires a whole arm motion while holding a thick handle, presenting no fine motor demands.
