Lightbulb Message Notification System

Lightbulb Message Notification System - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Georgia Tech community

About this project

The Lightbulb Message Notification System is an LED and app-based system that uses visual cues to alert the user when a notification has been received on their phone. The LED "lightbulb" can be placed anywhere around the users home. When a notification is received on the phone, the LED will turn or flash a certain color based on the notification. The color and pulse of the LED is fully customizable and can be set by the user in the app.

The challenge

When Mom watches TV or leaves her phone in a different room, she does not hear the alerts on her iPhone because the volume of the TV obstructs the audio alert from the iPhone. This frustrates her because it could be a family member or friend with some timely information. Mom needs another method to let her know that the alert has occurred.

Who it helps

“Mom” is an elderly woman who is losing her hearing. She owns an iPhone, which she uses to communicate with family and friends. Mom enjoys watching TV and working in her garden.
