Shower Alert and Stabilization System

Shower Alert and Stabilization System - open-source assistive technology concept by the Georgia Tech community

About this project

The Shower Alert and Stabilization System is a two-part shower system that provides extra support and alert capabilities to the user while in the shower. The shower part is made up of a removable shower handle and 3D printed alert box. The user can hold onto the handle for extra support and, if needed, press one of the buttons to signal for help. When a button is pressed, a tone will be emitted from the speaker system hidden in the base of the flower pot. The pot can be placed anywhere around the house and the tone will tell other members of the household that the user needs assistance.

The challenge

Create something for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) that would help with symptoms that occur while in the shower. The hot water can cause fainting, which can then only be attended to if someone happens to walk in the bathroom. The goal is to create a system that could provide handheld support and a way to notify a partner of symptoms.

Who it helps

Sarah is a student at Georgia State. She is majoring in Exercise Science because she hopes to one day work in a cardiac rehab facility.
