Matthew Project

Matthew Project - open-source assistive technology concept by the University of Maryland community

The challenge

This solution enhances independence for wheelchair users. Affordable market options are nonexistent, and current vehicle adaptations cost thousands, making them inaccessible to many.

Who it helps

Anybody who is in a wheelchair and needs help getting into their car independently

How it works

This solution allows for the wheelchair user to get into their car independently, without the support of others.

Our solution addresses three key issues: modifying wheelchair handlebars to fit in the trunk without folding, designing a ramp for direct access, and creating an autonomous system to load the wheelchair into the car.
