Medical Makers MILO

Medical Makers MILO - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Northwestern University community

The challenge

Using personal devices during recovery improves quality of life by enabling communication, entertainment, and emergency contact. This fosters independence, enhancing emotional well-being and supporting the healing process.

Who it helps

MILO serves users with severe mobility impairments, such as SCI patients, post-surgical individuals, or those with neurological conditions, enabling independent communication, entertainment, and engagement using head and neck movement.

How it works

Patients with limited mobility often struggle with tasks like making video calls, drinking water, or using personal devices. Our SCARA robotic arm enables voice control of these functions, enhancing independence, communication, and overall quality of life.

MILO is a voice-controlled phone holder for patients with limited mobility. Nurses can mount a phone in under 30 seconds, and patients can adjust it hands-free. MILO tracks their face, enabling calls and connection while keeping them in frame.
