Modular Grip Device

Modular Grip Device - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

Cooking is Pradip's hobby and passion, but he can't use a knife or a spatula because of his recent injury. Pradip does not want to rely on his family all the time for food and he wishes he could cook by himself.

Who it helps

Pradip is 35 years old male from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is a spinal injury patient from C4 to C7 which has affected his right hand and lower body.

How it works

Pradip has no power in his fingers and struggles to grip objects (he cannot clench his fist),so this product will enable him to use a knife or a spatula and assist him in cooking in the kitchen. He can apply pressure to cut with his palm and wrist movement.

Our product is a grip assistive device that can enable Pradip to hold a knife or a spatula more comfortably and securely. It also allows him to use the strength of his palm to cut vegetables with ease. The device can be switched between different utensils.
