MyVoice: Alternative Communication Enhancement Mobile App

MyVoice: Alternative Communication Enhancement Mobile App - open-source assistive technology concept by the TOM International Community community

The challenge

We aim to pursue a mobile application of the Accent 1400 to allow this system to be more usable and portable in addition to expanding to a speech to text option to allow one to have "conversations" with family and friends.

Who it helps

Carmela Nelson is a five year old girl with Rett's syndrome who communicates with her parents through an eye gazing device called the Accent 1400. Rett's syndrome is a rare, genetic neurological disorder that causes a loss of some motor and speech skills.

How it works

Providing this program on an iPad will replace the heavy and large Accent 1400, allowing for portability and transportation. The prompt feature will shorten the time to scroll through all the options on the Accent 1400 or any other eye-gazing speech.

We will develop an Accent 1400-like software on an iPad with the same layout. It will analyze the spoken question and provide answer prompts, while also implementing the eye gazing technology and modified dictionary of options currently on the Accent 1400.
