Recumbent Bike Pedals

Recumbent Bike Pedals - open-source assistive technology prototype by the Shenkar College community

About this project

This solution is a padded, PETG foot stabilizer with Velcro straps that securely supports Niv’s leg at 90° while cycling, improving both safety and comfort.

The challenge

We aimed to improve Niv's riding comfort and safety by creating a foot stabilizer for his right leg. Due to leg weakness, Niv needed a solution to keep his foot securely flexed and prevent lateral movement.

Who it helps

The foot stabilizer is ideal for individuals with leg weakness or neurological issues needing additional support while cycling. It benefits those who require a stable foot position for comfort and safety.

How it works

The foot stabilizer is designed for individuals with leg weakness or neurological conditions who need extra support while cycling. It ensures their foot stays in a secure and stable position for both comfort and safety.

Niv, who experiences leg weakness, needed a way to keep his right foot securely flexed and prevent unwanted lateral movement. The stabilizer was developed to improve his riding comfort, safety, and overall cycling experience.

The stabilizer attaches directly to the pedal with a built-in universal screw, making it an independent and removable component. Its design holds the leg in a 90° position, encouraging optimal muscle activity while providing stability and control.

A custom foot stabilizer made from durable PETG plastic , lined with soft padding where it contacts the foot, and secured with two Velcro straps — one at the front and one at the ankle — to keep the foot firmly in place during cycling.
