Reverse Vision for Wheelchairs

Reverse Vision for Wheelchairs - open-source assistive technology prototype by the TOM International Community community

About this project

The system uses a smartphone as a display running a custom app, connected to a rear-mounted webcam. This setup gives wheelchair users a clear rear view, improving mobility, accuracy, and independence.

The challenge

This project helps wheelchair users who can't turn their heads see behind them. It prevents errors like crossing boccia court lines and improves safety, precision, and independence in daily and sports activities.

Who it helps

Developed for a para-boccia athlete who can’t turn her head to look back, this reverse camera helps her stay within court boundaries. It also supports other wheelchair users needing better rear visibility and safety.

How it works

By streaming live video from a rear webcam to a smartphone screen, the system gives users real-time rear visibility—solving the challenge of limited neck mobility and helping avoid obstacles or crossing boundaries during movement.

Tools needed

scissors

Stanley knife
